- We (finally) completed our March Madness Tournament of Books! After a fun, respectful, and highly engaging student debate, Rosie Revere, Engineer by Andrea Beaty took home the prize as our 2K Favorite Book of the Year.. and I would have to agree! It's a personal favorite of mine. If you haven't read it, RUN to your local library and check it out to read to your kids!
- We got to candle our eggs this week for the first time! This is when we use a flaslight made especially for looking into eggs to see the progress of the chick's development. (See photos below)
- On Thursday, May 4th is our field trip to the Planetarium!
- We've been doing a balloon pop activity, counting down the days of the school year. Inside each balloon is an activity that students get to do/have for that day. So far we've: played a few favorite class games, solved puzzles, enjoyed donuts, and completed some STEAM challenges!
MATH
We are diving into 2D (plane) and 3D (solid) shapes next week! This week we introduced the concept of them by studying lines and sides of figures, but are getting into the good stuff next week. We're learning about shape attributes such as: vertices, faces, angles, and edges. At home, practice identifying shapes (ex: basketball=sphere, soda can=cylinder)!
READING
Next week is SHARK WEEK in 2K! We're learning about nonfiction texts and text features, as well as comparing and contrasting nonfiction texts. Students will also continue practicing the skill of monitoring their understanding while they read, which is especially important when reading nonfiction!
WRITING
We are beginning to create Fiction stories based around pirates! Arrrg! This is going to be such a fun project, where students will be learning all about story setting, character development, problem & solution, and story events! We are learning how to have a strong beginning, middle, and end, and soon will be learning about including dialogue and imagery in our stories! Stay tuned!
SCIENCE
We have been learning about all things CHICKS! We are halfway through the incubation stage of our chicks, and hoping for a successful hatch! Next week we will continue learning about not only the egg stage, but the hatchling stage as well as we prepare for our hatch.
