MATH
We finished our math test over place value, comparing numbers, and ordering numbers! Those tests will be coming home today (Friday), so please look them over with your child. Next week we are launching into a brand new math chapter: Addition up to 1,000!
READING
We learned all about visualizing while we read this week through the story The Salamander Room, and we dug into poetry a bit as well to practice this skill.
Check out our new chapter book read aloud on our blog sidebar: Frindle! Ask your child what it's about so far!
To promote sharing our reading at home, I've created a grid on Flipgrid HERE for our class! Students can create a short video showing off a book they're reading. It could be a book from my library or the RES library, or even a book from home or your local library. ANYTHING they're reading!
Students should be sure to share the following in their videos:
1. Title, Author/Illustrator
2. Summary
3. Rating (out of 5 stars)
Then, students are free to click an emoji reaction to each other's videos. Please show this Emoji Reaction Guide to your child FIRST. :) I can't wait to hear about all the amazing reading your child will do this year! Let's fill up that Flipgrid!
WRITING
We are learning about personal narratives! Students will create their own small moment story about a time in their life when they said, "Ouch!" This week we focused on brainstorming and narrowing down a topic to one moment. We learned that a personal narrative is a TRUE moment that actually happened to us, and we'll be starting to organize our information next week. Ask your child about what moment they're choosing!
NEXT WEEK:
Spelling Pattern: -eed, -eat, -ea
Sight Words: I've, run, fell, fire, never
Grammar Focus: Parts of Speech--Verbs
Comprehension Skill: Making Inferences & Drawing Conclusions
Vocabulary: errands, admire, precious, speckled, gently, memory
IMPORTANT NOTES:
- Students will bring home a "book in a bag" each week. They are to keep it at home and read it (at least 3x--we're working on fluency) by the following Friday. Then, they take an AR test on it. Students who pass their picture book quizzes continually will move onto taking home chapter books each week, if they're ready.
- Please send in $12 in form of cash or check for your child's field trip money. Include your child's name and "field trip money" on the outside of the envelope. We are planning to take two trips, one to the Hult Center and the second is TBD.
